If your grass is uneven patchy and grass seeding is out of the question then its time to consider re turfing. Turf is known to be the quickest way of getting that perfect-grassed lawn.
First we will begin to measure up the area of garden that will be grassed over and this will give you your square meters of turf rolls you need to order, its good practice to alow for some wastage and order 2 to 5 rolls extra if you not sure.

Hire a turf cutter if you have a large area as this will save your back from hours of pain stacking work, this will cut the turf from the soil and you can easily roll it up and put it on the skip our compost heap.

Once we have a clean surface from old grass and weeds we begin to turn the soil better know as rotivating this should be done with a good rotivator to allow for oxygen to penetrate the old soil and brake up any clay. If your soil is clay in most cases in Ealing you can add a tonne of sharp sand and carry on rotivating this into your soil. Get yourself a good rake and rake any weeds, roots and stones up and dispose off.

Clay soil is the cause of poor drainage and moss growth and cracking of turf in summer.
Its important to order a very good grade of Loam that is blended for turfing and can feed your new turf for 6 months ahead.
In most cases 1 tonne of blended loam will cover a surface area of 10sqm, once you have wheel barrowed the topsoil in begin to rake and level, make sure by stepping on the whole area you have no soft bits and level again. We now take a board for kneeling on and begin to knit each turf roll together with out over lapping them and leaving no gaps.

Once we are done water in very well with a sprinkler, water for 30mins and lift up a corner of the turf roll to see if the bottom is wet if it is then this is a good indication that 30mins of water every day is getting to the base of the turf where the roots grow from.
If it is summer and the weather is very hot you should water early morning and late evening to keep the turf roll moist and stop it from drying out as this will dry out the new white roots.

Do not walk on newly laid turf for 7days in summer and Autumn 12 days after turfing, after 7 to 12 days cut the lawn by cutting a very small amount and repeat this every 3 days until the grass has established and after 2 weeks normal traffic can take place.

For a healthy lawn its is very important to cut the grass as soon as it looks like it needs a cut, its better practice to take off small amounts than to cut a large amount. Cutting small amounts will cause the thatch to grow low causing it to be thick and strong.
Leaving it long and only cutting it once a month will cause the thatch to rise and any lower blades to die.

It is very important to feed a lawn every 6 moths after it has been laid with a good grass fertiliser and not from you local convenient store as high content of bleach and other chemicals weaken it. A good 6-month organic slow release grass fertiliser can be ordered from cutting-hedge.com
