How to build a garden fence
There are many ways and many types of garden fencing.
Close Board fencing
Close Board fencing can be done either in wood or wood and concrete posts.
First you will begin to clear the old fence and remember to clear all existing concrete in the ground as this will save you time when digging your new hole for the posts.
In most cases fencing is divided into bays, normally 3m bays as your airs rails and gravel board will come in standard sizes of 3m. If for example your fence is 5 metres long you will have one bay of 3m and the other of 2 meters which means the airs rails will need to be cut to size along with the gravel board.
A good Fencing supplier in England will give you the choice of mortised post and ended airs rail to help you save time. This means that aris rail brackets will not be needed and you can just slot the airs rail into the post. If you end up with a 2 meter bay you will need to cut the airs rail and nail an airs rail bracket onto the post and rail, these are very handy in this situation and will save you a lot of time.
Once we have our line cleared we can begin to get a straight line a string line works well in this situation. We then begin to mark our bays out and where the post will go.
It is good practice not to dig your hole to wide, as this will only allow for more postfix cement hence increasing your total budget.
A posthole digger is a great tool and this will insure you dig the correct width. Depth is also important and a good depth is 2 foot deep, this will make sure your fence does not shift over time especially if they are concrete posts.
Our post hole are dug and the correct depth in each hole is the same, this can be checked by placing you gravel board down and resting a feather edge on top next to the post. The featheredge board should reach the end of the post on both sides and 1 to 2 foot left for a trellis. Take a spirit level now and place it on the gravel board to check you have a middle reading and you are now ready to start attaching the fence.
We begin by levelling the posts and attaching the gravel board and airs rails to create a loose fence structure before adding your post create to the holes.
This is a good practice to make sure every thing is 101% perfect and to allow you to make any final adjustments.
If you are happy insert some bricks to the base of the post to support it and to check the level from 2 sides that its straight in the ground. Add water to the hole and begin to pour your cement, it’s important to read the instructions on the post create, as there are many types on the market.
Final adjustments during the stage of post cement been wet should be done and left to set for 15 to 30 minutes. We now should have our 3 airs rail attached to the post and our gravel board. Now take your featheredge and begin to nail it to the airs rails keeping the correct sp
